Hawaii Volcano Helicopter Tours

Tourists simply love volcano helicopter tours, especially ones that fly over the five volcanoes that built Hawaii (The Big Island), the south easternmost and the youngest Hawaiian Island.
Kohala, at the northwest end of the island, is the oldest. Erosion has transformed its rainy northeast slope into spectacular canyons.
Mauna Kea, which last erupted about 4,500 years ago, holds the distinction of being the only Hawaiian volcano known to have had a summit glacier during the last ice age. Remains of this glacier are visible above the Mauna Kea State Recreation Area in the saddle between Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea.
Hualalai, which rises above Kailua-Kona, last erupted in 1801.
The two southernmost volcanoes, Mauna Loa and Kilauea, have both erupted numerous times in the last two centuries.
Mauna Loa (longest mountain) is the largest single mountain mass on earth. From its base on the down-bowed sea floor, Mauna Loa rises 56,000 feet, of which 13,677 feet are above sea level. Thousands of layers of thin lava flows, averaging only 10 to 15 feet in thickness, built Mauna Loa. Throughout the last two centuries, Mauna Loa has erupted more than 5.7 billion cubic yards of lava.
Kilauea closely resembles Mauna Loa in structure. The mountain rises more than 20,000 feet above the ocean floor, formed largely by eruptions along two rift zones extending from the summit caldera. Floored by nearly 2,600 acres of lava flows erupted since the late 19th century, the Kilauea summit caldera is two and a half miles long by two miles wide.
While we strongly recommend a ground-level experience of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, if you can afford it, also consider volcano helicopter tours. Many consider these helicopter tours, which fly over the volcanoes of Kilauea and Mauna Loa, to be the single most spectacular adventures found anywhere in the world.
