Kauai Biking
Hawaii biking is for the inexperienced and seasoned cyclists. Beautiful scenery, hot sunny days, strong head winds, and hefty climbs (once you get off the coastal routes) make cycling on the Hawaiian Islands a real adventure.
Hawaii has been slow to adopt cycle-friendly roads. A few new road projects now include cycle lanes, but such lanes are still relatively rare on the islands. Hawaii roads tend to be narrow, and many of the main coastal routes are heavily trafficked (especially around dinner when locals are returning from work).
The good news is the Department of Transportation recognizes the need to upgrade its roads for cyclists and has come up with a
Hawaii Biking Plan
for all of the main Hawaiian Islands.
Other than the shortage of bike lanes, cycling along the road is really not a problem. However, due to the limited access to public forests and trails, getting off the beaten path can be little more complicated. But this too is getting better.
With the popularity of mountain biking increasing, so too are the number of mountain bike trails. Click here to Browse Cyclist & Mountain Bike Trails by Region.
You will find places to rent all kinds of bicycles on all the islands.
If you plan to bring your own bicycle to Hawaii, you can transport it on interisland flights for $20. The bicycle can be checked at the counter, the same as any baggage, but you will need to prepare the bike first either by wrapping the handlebars and pedals in foam or by fixing the handlebars to the side and removing the pedals.
There are many Hawaii biking tours available. Two popular cycle adventures are cruising down the scenic slopes of Hawaii’s volcanoes in and Some companies also provide hotel transportation and a snack.
