Hawaii volcano tours are extremely popular on the Big Island and Maui.
Three active volcanoes became Hawaii National Park by an act of Congress on August 1, 1916. The new park included parts of Kilauea and Mauna Loa on the Big Island of Hawaii, and Haleakala on Maui. In 1961 the park was divided into Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and Haleakala National Park.
Each year millions of people experience Hawaii volcano tours at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and Haleakala National Park to view the results of past volcanic activity. The fortunate few who visit Kilauea or Mauna Loa when they are erupting gaze in awe at great lava fountains, seething lakes of molten rock, or red-glowing rivers of flowing lava.
For the past 20 years or so the Big Island's volcano of Kilauea has been almost continually active and at various times during the 1900's the volcano of Mauna Loa has been active as well.
All this volcanic activity has provided tremendous excitement for residents and visitors alike and it has become the focal point for many of the Hawaii activities available on the Big Island.
Here are some of the top Hawaii volcano tours for the Big Island and Maui:
- From the summit of Mt. Haleakala to the sea is a 38-mile journey. While biking downhill, you’ll view the stunning sunrises and colorful moonscapes of Maui, Hawaii, atop of 10,023-foot Haleakala volcano to the clear, warm, turquoise waters of the Pacific Ocean. You’ll bike down the world’s largest inactive volcano with only 400 yards of pedaling. Often you will stop for a picturesque Maui moment.
- Imagine touring Maui's scenic Haleakala Ranch on your own All Terrain Vehicle (ATV). You'll be exploring 14 miles of beautiful rolling hills and high mountain forest that can only be reached on an ATV.
- Enjoy the freedom of mountain biking down Haleakala Volcano at your own pace. You drop 3,000 feet in 10 miles and curve around 29 switchbacks. Stop often and enjoy the incredible vistas of west Maui surrounded by the Pacific. Below 4,000 feet you come to "Upcountry Maui" – vegetable truck farms, protea farms, lodges, galleries and Kula Botanical Gardens.
- Take the horseback adventure of a lifetime... with one of the only horseback rides in the world that ventures into a dormant volcano! This crater horseback tours take place at world-famous Haleakala Crater on Maui, approximately 10,000 feet above sea level.
- 4-Mile Haleakala Crater Hike – Rated Moderate
Called the "Crater Sampler," this hike gives a true feeling of the crater without being strenuous. Journey part way down both the switchback trail at 8,000 feet and the summit trail at 10,000 feet. Although never reaching the crater floor, experience the volcano’s power and silence and enjoy magnificent views from an up-high vantage point.
- Only on the Big Island can you experience the planet's tallest volcano (32,000 feet above the sea floor), Hawaii's tallest mountain (13,796 feet) and watch the sun setting in the peaceful Pacific Ocean. One of the best Hawaii volcano tours!
- Take an all-day expedition to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, a remarkable 250-mile drive, traveling over 4 volcanoes, with an elevation change of 37,000 feet as you go up and down and over mountains. Enjoy the "must see" places within the Park while you learn about their geological and historic significance. Join the journey that Frommer’s Guide to Hawaii says "May very well be the highlight of your vacation." Recipient of the 2002 "Keep It Hawaii" Merit Award.
